Effects of Estradiol on the Oxygen Consumption Rates of the Uterine Tissues

Abstract
The endcmetriuni is one of the most dynamic. structures in the human body characterizing a complete life cycle within a short span of time. During the past years many detailed descriptions have appeared of the cyclic morphologic changes of the human endometrium and their dependency on sex steroids, especially on estrogen.Although many morphologic peculiarities were found, little is known of the mechanisms by which such changes are accomplished. The work reported here was carried out to investigate biochemical analysis with the oxygen consumption rates using Warburg¢¥s manometric method in animal experiments and human uterine tissues, especially on the relation of estradiol to the oxygen consumption rates(Qo2) The following results were obtained with above mentioned animal and human uterine tissues.
1) Cyclic variations of Qo2 were observed in norman human endometrium. Generally the rates were increased in late, proliferative phase and late secretory phase, especially a peak during late secretory phase.
2) The rates were markedly decreased in amenorrheic and postmenopausal womens.
3) From the rat¢¥s uterine tissues treated with viarious amounts of estradiol the rates were unchanged in the minimal amounts (0.001 ug), markedly increased in physiological amounts(0. 01-0. lug), and decreased in larger amounts.
4) With the stimulation of physiogical amounts of estradiol Q02 of the endometrium was much increased, and there were no noticeable chan;es in the myometrium and liver.
5) By the findings of the increment of Qo2 of the rabbit¢¥s enlometrium stimu. fated with estradiol 0. lpg using various organic acids of TCA cycle with substrate, it is suggested that the sites of action of estradiol is in the dehydrogenase activity associated with DPN, coenzyme.
